CluBE’s school trainings under PRECIOUS project empower children to fight food waste, one bite at a time

Four school trainings, one shared message: Not a single bite wasted!

Between November and December 2025, CluBE, the Cluster of Bioeconomy & Environment of Western Macedonia in Greece, delivered a series of engaging primary school actions as part of the European project PRECIOUS. The goal was simple and powerful: help students understand food loss and waste to inspire practical habits that prevent it at home and at school.

From the moment we arrived, classrooms were full of energy. Students stepped into the role of FOOD HEROes. Young change-makers were ready to protect the planet through everyday choices.

Why food waste matters

Food waste is not only a social and economic issue, but it also has a clear environmental footprint. When food is wasted, the resources used to produce, transport, and store it are wasted too. When organic waste ends up in landfills, it contributes directly to climate change through greenhouse gas emissions. That is why early awareness is key. Τhe earlier children build mindful habits, the more natural those habits become for life.

Learning through participation

CluBE designed the workshops to be hands-on, age-appropriate and fun. Instead of a standard lecture, students learned through discussion, real-life examples, and a team-based mission game.

Across the sessions, students explored:

• What food waste is and why it matters
• Common everyday situations where food is thrown away unnecessarily
• How to read food labels correctly («use by» vs «best before»)
• Creative ways to reuse leftovers and reduce waste at home
• The value of traditional gastronomy, where nothing was wasted

The collaborative mission game, specially designed for our PRECIOUS FOOD HEROes, brought these concepts to life, challenging teams to make smart choices, solve problems together, and «rescue» food.

Across four school visits, more than 100 students were engaged in interactive discussions and hands-on activities that helped them recognize where food waste happens in daily life and how easily it can be prevented. Through teamwork, problem-solving and playful challenges, they practiced making smarter choices, from reading labels correctly to planning portions and storing food safely.

Food Hero Gear: a simple tool that keeps the mission going

To help the message last beyond the classroom, each student received a PRECIOUS Food Hero Gear: a recycled lunch bag/thermos. It supports safe meal carrying and encourages returning leftovers home, making waste prevention a daily habit, not just a lesson.

What changed: awareness, confidence and everyday habits

Across the four elementary schools the project team visited, students demonstrated strong curiosity and an impressive willingness to act. They left informed, motivated and empowered, understanding that food waste is preventable, and that their choices matter.

Through PRECIOUS project, CluBE will continue supporting the next generation with practical knowledge and tools to reduce food loss and waste. Because when children lead, communities follow, and sustainability becomes part of everyday life.
